The research was conducted at a small midwestern campus. The implications of the research point to the popularity of pet ownership and individuals owning pets to increase happiness. The pet/human bond, while commonly esteemed, has been somewhat neglected in the psychological community. The results did not significantly support the hypothesized link between wanting to own a pet and stereotyped feminine characteristics. More research into androgyny, liking pets, and pet preference may indicate different results. The idea that individuals can increase their own happiness has been popularized through concepts like Dr. Martin Seligman’s Positive Psychology. The current research seeks to support this concept.
