Twitter descriptions are hardly a comprehensive accounting of each participant’s identity. OWS positions itself as a hybrid, combining a non-ideological movement with the tactics of a traditional oppositional identity. The Twitter profiles show that the demonstrations gave rise to tweets by legitimizing, oppositional, and project identities. The evidence shows clearly the presence of legitimizing identities connected to both political and civil society entities. These were the most common identities encountered in our data. We will elaborate the results in relation to each of our hypotheses.
